Small bathroom remodeling ideas

Not all bathrooms can be lavish spaces with whirlpool tubs and two separate vanities. Most bath renovations involve working with the existing bathroom space, in many cases no more than 50 SF.

Remodeling a small bathroom can be a tricky proposition, especially if you want to create an impression of larger space, fit all accessories in the available one and avoid a clutter, all without compromising on a tasteful effect and functionality. This requires some careful planning whether you choose to do the work yourself or hire bathroom remodelers.

Before beginning your small bathroom remodeling, design a floor plan that maximizes the room's useable space. This will give your small bathroom a more spacious look and feel, along with an update of the bathroom fixtures and finishes.

Here are some small bathroom remodel ideas:

Vanities / Sinks
  Small bathroom remodeling
Scale down your bathroom fixtures as much as possible. Big items take up more space in the bathroom and look bulky. Corner bathroom sinks are simple and small. These sinks free up visual space below, but don't provide the counter space and cabinet space that a traditional sink provides. Another option is a pedestal sink. These sinks have a more classic design and are free standing. Wall-mounted sinks save space but do not have counter space. Both types of bathroom sinks do not provide storage space underneath.

    shallower Vanity
If vanity storage space is essential, a pedestal sink won’t work, but a smaller or shallower vanity with less counter space might be an option. Another option might be smaller corner vanity, though additional bathroom plumbing rough-in will be involved in a location change. If you must have a larger vanity, I might suggest one that is raised on legs. It will look less bulky as more of the floor will show.

Toilet

Pick a toilet that can sit close to the wall to conserve space, and the size of the seat and tank design determine just how much space the toilet will use. Also pay attention to the size of the home's original toilet. Older homes have toilets with 10 to 14 inches between the wall and the toilet drain, but newer homes typically have 12 inches. The wrong toilet won't fit. Buying a toilet with a low tank takes up less visual space and compact toilets leave more room, but as with any small bathroom remodeling project, use these suggestions to find a toilet that is both stylish and fits in the room.

Medicine Cabinet/Mirrors

No matter where you live, chances are you wish you had a more spacious bathroom. When major renovation is not an option, how do you create more room in the same amount of space? By thinking creatively, and making use of a few visual tricks. A large mirror will reflect light, and can trick the eye into expanding the space, while one or more small mirrors can crowd the wall.

Mirrors can optimize on the light and add to the impression of space, but don't go overboard with them; too many will create a ghastly effect in a small space. Go for just one or two. Try an ornate or Venetian wall mirror, strategically placed for good light reflection that will also serve a decorative purpose. Actually, there are a whole lot of varieties in wall mirrors. Take your time to find one that goes with the overall design scheme.

 Color Scheme

Plan a bathroom color scheme that will enhance the available space. Which means, go for light or pastel color schemes rather than dark ones for the floor, walls and ceiling. And, even with light colors, don't pick the entire gamut. Simplicity and good color coordination is the key here. Another important factor is pattern, which, if applied in a vertical fashion, can give an impression of increased height to your bathroom. So paint walls in vertical stripes, or fit wall-paper and bathroom tiles in a vertical pattern. You can also tile the entire wall and add a border of a different color near the ceiling. Using large, identically-shaped tiles with narrow grout lines for both walls and floors can also help.

Light colors in flooring, tile, wallpaper and paint will make the room feel more spacious and airy. Lighter colors reflect more light. By no means does this restrict you to an all white bath - lighter shades of your favorite color can still make a statement while keeping the room bright. Add little decorative touches with plants in tiny pots and attractive bath items that go well with the decor.

Windows

Light gives a spacious feel to a room, so arrange windows in a way that allows in plenty of natural light and at the same time ensures privacy. If possible, consider installing a sky-light.

Lighting

Good lighting is essential. Shadowy corners will make any room feel cramped or unkempt. There are many options to fit both your style and your budget. Recessed lighting can be installed at several points in the ceiling to banish shadows altogether, and does not take up counter or wall space. Wall sconces or even a small chandelier can add elegance. Check your existing fixtures - you may be able to improve the lighting in your bathroom simply by installing a brighter bulb.

Lighting in a small bathroom is very important and is the best way to make you and others feel like they are in a spacious room rather than a dingy dark one. Options include spotlights from cabinets and the ceiling which provide phenomenal lighting in any room without using up any space as they are implemented. Curtains sometimes get in the way and make a room feel darker, so replacing them with blinds will give you that natural lighting effect you want with the same amount of privacy.

Install artificial lights in the bathroom corners and, if you can, strip lighting along the walls. With good illumination, your bathroom can look larger than it actually is.

Placement of fixtures

Save space in your bathroom by fitting sliding doors rather than hinged ones. Doors that slide into an in-wall cavity also look pretty cool, so that's another plus. You can also attach door hooks that fold down flat when in the cavity and can otherwise be used to hang clothes and towels from.

Install a wash-basin with shelves under it where you can store soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics and other such items. A cupboard or shelves over the toilet or tall cabinets along empty walls can also offer much-needed storage space. These can hold all the necessary items as well as decorative objects that brighten up the bathroom.

A bath-tub is a space-devourer, so consider installing a shower instead. Get a shower stall with curved sides as that will be more space-saving. You can cordon it with bright shower curtains that complement your bathroom tiles.

Consider how far any element in the room protrudes. For example, replacing a vanity with a pedestal sink opens up floor space, visually broadening the room. Likewise, shelves, towel racks, and sconces that reach to far out make a room feel smaller and disrupts the space. Consider towel bars instead of shelves. Keep decorative accents close to the wall to allow as much free space as possible.

The thing that will have the most significant effect in making your bathroom seem more spacious is to strictly eliminate all clutter. If you don't need it in the bathroom, take it out, with the exception of a few decorative accents. Overcrowded shelves, bathroom cabinets, vanities and walls crowd a room. Look at each thing in the room and consider whether or not you use it, in that room, on a regular basis. If you don't, the item may have a better home elsewhere in the house. Remove beauty and hygiene supplies from the countertops, and find them a home elsewhere. If you don't have a bathroom cabinet, an attractive basket under the sink will hold your supplies, keeping them close at hand while reducing clutter.

Finally, limit what you bring into the bathroom. To save space in a cramped bathroom, for example, it may be best to have a dressing area in a bedroom. Limit the number of accessories -- clutter can easily make a small bathroom look smaller.

Planning a small remodeling may take extra planning, but the resulting clean, beautiful, an uncluttered bathroom will be an inviting space.
